The Northwood University Rocket League team proved to be unstoppable since late
September when the team beat Indiana Tech 4-1 in the finals of the Great Lakes Gaming
Convention. Continuing their run of excellence, the Varsity Rocket League team competed
within the top 24 teams in the United States for a split prizing of $50,000. The Future Play
Collegiate Showdown saw 24 teams of the top 32 teams in the North American region
compete in a double elimination bracket across the weekend of October 3rd. This event
previously set to be held in Illinois, got moved online after the host organization, Future
Play, postponed the in-person event to April of 2027. However, Future Play and event
organizer Garden State Esports; the New Jersey state scholastic Esports organization,
decided to continue to hold the event online.
Northwood, started at the 9th seed, battled six rounds in the upper bracket without
dropping a series to become the Future Play champions. The Timberwolves matched up
against the 1st, 3rd, 6th and 12th ranked teams in the nation to secure their spot in the grand
finals. In the grand finals, the Timberwolves faced a rematch storied from earlier in the
tournament and the GLGC Finals in the Indiana Tech Warriors. Similar results bode well for
Northwood as they toppled the Warriors 4-2 to claim the first-place prize.
This result cements Northwood as the #1 team in the nation for Collegiate Rocket League
as of October 4th, 2026. A team consisting of freshman duo from Brazil, Motta and Miguel,
and captain Muir reasserts themselves as one of the best in the industry. Especially important
after in Spring 2026, the Varsity Rocket League recorded their lowest placing result in the
official Collegiate Rocket League events of 5th place.
