Maui Invitational – November 2020

Northwood University’s Varsity Esports team continues to dominate the competition during the 2020 fall semester. The Varsity Rocket League team qualified for the Maui Invitational this past week and quickly blazed through the competition.

The three student-athletes who make up Northwood’s Varsity Rocket League team beat the University of Alabama 4-0 Thursday in the quarterfinals and Illinois 4-0 Friday in the semifinals. These two wins earned Northwood a spot in the grand finals Sunday, November 22nd, against Mizzou.

“This is a big moment for Northwood University and the developing Esports program. Getting any national broadcast is a massive boost in exposure for our Varsity team,” Northwood Esports Head Coach Cody Elsen said. “The team has recently won the Collegiate Rocket League Eastern Conference Championship, NACE National Championship, Intel AVGL Championship and the Upsurge Premier League Championship. We aim to continue this momentum into the Maui Invitational Grand Finals this Sunday on ESPN2 against Mizzou.”

The Maui Invitational is traditionally a storied college basketball tournament that was founded in 1984 and this year has recently expanded into Esports with the inaugural Maui Esports Invitational. In its history, 108 schools, 26 conferences and 40 states have competed in the Maui Invitational collectively.
